The new BMW M5
The new BMW M5 has gained a lot in weight: how much does the hybrid power plant weigh?
The new generation BMW M5 debuted yesterday. One of the most discussed points was that the rated curb weight of the new product was 2435 kg, which, for comparison, is more than half a ton heavier than the previous BMW M5 F90 and a full ton heavier than the first M5 E34. Frank van Meel, head of BMW M, points out that the bulk of the weight gain comes from the car's hybrid system.
In an interview with Top Gear magazine, Frank van Meel noted that the company made the right decision to use a full plug-in hybrid system instead of a conventional hybrid add-on, despite the increase in weight. The top manager explains that the plug-in hybrid system adds about 400 kg of weight, while a conventional hybrid makes the car heavier by 150–200 kg.
After the debut of the new M5, negative reviews began to appear on the Internet due to its weight, which, by the way, exceeds the weight of cars such as the Chevrolet Tahoe, Ford F-150 and Lucid Air Sapphire. However, Frank van Meel added that the development team took into account the increase in weight and determined what changes were necessary to ensure high-level performance parameters.
The new generation BMW M5
Let us remind you that the new generation BMW M5 received a rechargeable hybrid installation, including a BMW S68 engine (4.4 liter V8), one electric motor, an 8-speed automatic transmission from ZF, a fully controlled chassis, and all-wheel drive with traction vector control. The power of the new product is 727 hp, peak torque is 1000 Nm. The sedan accelerates to 100 km/h from a standstill in 3.5 seconds.
Van Meel also mentioned that BMW considered an all-electric M5, but abandoned the idea because current technology cannot yet deliver the expected performance and range required from an M5 model.
Let us remind you that the day before BMW released a special version of the X5 crossover in honor of the 25th anniversary of the model.
A defective antenna resulted in a million-dollar lawsuit for BMW
26-06-2024 News JRKNCPCARS: A defective antenna resulted in a million-dollar lawsuit for BMW.
A cheap defect brought the German automaker BMW to a class action lawsuit worth about $5 million.
Owners of BMW vehicles manufactured between 2017 and 2023 have filed a class action lawsuit against the automaker for $5 million in the District Court of New Jersey in the United States. The cause was a defect that cost less than $100 to fix immediately.
Due to a defective seal, moisture enters the antenna, damaging important components in the vehicle, Carlaints writes, citing plaintiff Tim Kraft. The car owner insists that BMW management was initially aware of a defect called “shark fin”, but hid it from the public. According to the plaintiff, because of this antenna defect, a number of car owners had to pay for expensive repairs.
Tim Kraft purchased a 2019 BMW X5 from a dealership. After some time, some functions of the vehicle began to fail, including the emergency call system, GPS navigation, speakerphone and others. In addition, problems began to arise with activating the car.
The service center told the man that the cause of all the problems was moisture getting into the telematics unit. It was also determined that water was entering through a loose antenna on the roof. The cost of repair work from the damage resulting from this defect was estimated at 2.5 thousand dollars.
Kraft was not the only one who encountered a similar problem with a car produced by BMW. The situation with the defective antenna eventually resulted in a high-profile lawsuit against the famous automobile giant.

The BMW Z4 has turned into a retro Tender 5.7 roadster in the style of the BMW 507.
The story of Elvis Presley's lost and found BMW 507 Roadster inspired the German company Estella-Fahrzeugtechnik GmbH to create a special body for the G29 Z4 Roadster. The car, dubbed the Tender 5.7, features a new retro-styled carbon fiber body and will be produced in a limited edition of 15 units.
The round headlights, elongated grille, side gills and sharp fender lines are clear references to the original.
The interior borrows heavily from the BMW Z4 G29, including the digital instrument cluster, Harman Kardon audio system and gear selector. However, its two-seater interior is now covered in special full-grain leather that can be individually personalized to the owner's taste.
Under the hood is a 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine from the BMW Z4 M40i, which produces 500 hp. (373 kW) and 650 Nm of torque. This represents a significant increase in power of 165 hp. (123 kW) and 150 Nm compared to the standard M40i, made possible by a larger turbocharger, exhaust pipe and upgraded exhaust system.
Chassis changes include fully adjustable suspension coupled with a new set of 20-inch forged alloy wheels that closely resemble those from BMW's Alpina tuner.
Tender 5.7 is named after the popular Elvis song “Love me Tender”. Each of the 15 units planned for production will be painted in its own unique shade.
According to the official website, two of the 15 pieces have already been sold to customers. Auto Moto Und Sport reports that each Tender 5.7 starts at €288,000, making it around five times more expensive than a regular BMW Z4. For that kind of money you can buy a BMW Z8, which also has styling cues inspired by the 507, but with a real V8 under the hood.
