The interior of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class of the next generation of 2024. The new E-Class sedan is scheduled to arrive at dealerships later this year, but today we get a preview of the new interior design and dashboard.
At first glance, this interior design is somewhat familiar, with a huge number of screens in one module, but it is not a hyperscreen. Instead, Mercedes-Benz calls it Superscreen. Funny. This is not a “hyperscreen” because the large infotainment screen and the passenger screen also do not include an instrument cluster. Instead, the digital unit is located separately and stands vertically, unlike other screens located at an angle.
However, this three-screen interior is not the only layout available for the new E-Class. This is an additional upgrade setup, and the standard dashboard layout will include a free-standing screen in the center (without a screen for the passenger), which, according to Mercedes, will “hover" over the trim located below it. We don't have any photos of it right now, but I wouldn't be surprised if it ended up looking the same as the S-Class dashboard.
In the photos, there are a small number of buttons under the superscreen, but say goodbye to all the tactile switches and roller knobs present in the current E-class. This new E is going digital. Like any brand new Mercedes-Benz product, this one is also full of new digital toys to play with.
The big update that Mercedes is bragging about today is the new “Active Ambient Lighting" system. Mercedes has developed software that will coordinate the ambient lighting in the cabin with the music played through the audio system. For example, Mercedes says that “fast rhythm sequences can cause rapid lighting changes, while smooth rhythms can create softly merging light moods.” Of course, it can be turned off if you don't want to be distracted by a real disco happening in the car. But hey, now you can leave the club and feel like you've never really left on the way home.
Mercedes says that in addition to active lighting, the new E-Class will feature a Burmester 4D surround sound system. At the same time, sound converters are used in the seat backs, which literally make you vibrate to the beat of the music. Thus, in addition to Dolby Atmos surround sound, you can both physically feel the rhythm and see it in a light form. There is definitely no more immersive audio experience today.
At launch, the E-Class will be able to run third-party applications in its infotainment system, and the initially available group includes TikTok, Angry Birds, Cisco's Webex, Zoom, and the Vivaldi web browser. You may ask, how will Zoom and Webex work? Mercedes has added a video camera for selfies to the interior, which can transmit video over the 5G network built into the car, provided that you pay for a data package from a third-party supplier. According to Mercedes, more apps will become available over time.
Another new technology introduced today is a “visual screen” for the passenger screen, which sounds similar to what Jeep does with its passenger screen so that the driver is not distracted by it. Mercedes uses a technology it calls “dual lighting control” so that the driver cannot see the screen with peripheral vision. If the camera in the car still detects that the driver's eyes are trying to see the screen, it will additionally darken it to be doubly sure that they will not be able to watch any movie or video that the passenger is enjoying.
We'll have to wait until the end of this year for the new E-Class to be fully unveiled, but expect a debut soon if Mercedes intends to introduce them to dealers by the end of 2023.
