Volkswagen has introduced a new generation Passat station wagon .
Volkswagen Passat still exists after five decades on the market and more than 30 million copies sold, but with the change of generation, the history of the model will change dramatically. The German brand abandoned the sedan body a little over a year ago, so what was recently called the Passat Variant will now remain just a Passat.
The Wolfsburgers have just introduced the seventh generation of the model, which will become one of the greatest novelties of the Munich Motor Show, a real star that brings important innovations in all areas to remain a benchmark in its class and in the automotive market around the world. Its dimensions are among the most noteworthy because, although it may not seem like it, the new Passat is larger than its predecessor. So, with the height remaining unchanged, the new generation of the station wagon has added 144 millimeters in length, 50 millimeters in the wheelbase and 20 millimeters in width.
The result is a more spacious station wagon for all five passengers and a larger trunk volume. But of course, it also stands out for its design. Its all-LED headlights now have a new shape, are connected by a light strip passing through a thin grille, and are installed in a completely new bumper.
With 19-inch alloy wheels, the Volkswagen Passat of the new generation has more inclined rear pillars, where a more sporty style can be traced, and new lights have appeared in the rear. A more sporty character can be seen in the top-end finish of the R-Line, which boasts a spoiler above the trunk door and an aerodynamic diffuser painted in glossy black. The Passat is more aerodynamic, with a drag coefficient that has been reduced from the previous 0.31 to 0.25.
The interior of the new Passat has completely changed. The dashboard is new, with the promised multifunctional steering wheel with classic keys and a new "Digital Cockpit" dashboard, more vertical, 10.25 inches diagonal and fully customizable. The automatic gearshift lever is now on the steering column, and next to it is a large 12.9-inch high-resolution touchscreen as standard and a 15-inch as an option. The infotainment system "MIB4" is new, it now concentrates all the settings of the car, including automatic climate control. The equipment is really stunning. It is worth at least highlighting the new projection display, which occupies the entire windshield. But the automaker did not forget about the passengers. The "ergoActive" front seats are electric and adjustable in 14 positions, inherited from ID.7, and with massage, heating and ventilation functions.
The new Volkswagen Passat has a wide engine range with five soft hybrids and two plug-in hybrids. All internal combustion engines are known from the old generation model, but they have been deeply optimized to provide greater performance and at the same time greater efficiency. The simplest gasoline unit has taken a step forward, having received 48 V technology to the 1.5 eTSI engine.
A starter and generator have now been added to the cylinder shutdown system in addition to a 48 V lithium-ion battery. The electric motor adds an additional power of 85 kW or 130 kW, so that the two available eHybrid versions add up to a total maximum power of 204 hp and 272 hp. These two PHEVs are paired with a dual-clutch automatic transmission, unlike gasoline and diesel versions, which rely only on a 6-speed DSG. Volkswagen technicians installed a new lithium-ion battery, increasing its capacity from the previous 10.6 kWh to 19.7 kWh, so the power reserve on electric traction is 100 kilometers. The battery has its own liquid cooling system, thanks to which the new Passat has a towing capacity of up to 2,200 kilograms.
Volkswagen will continue to offer the same range of modifications, starting with the basic, namely: "Business", "Elegance" and "R-Line". The German firm has not yet announced when the new Passat will go on sale, although information suggests that it will be launched on the market before the end of the year and will arrive at dealerships around March.
