The Blue Oval acknowledged that some dealers have opted out of participating [in the Ford Model e electric vehicle sales program], focusing on ICE and hybrid vehicles. A Ford spokesperson told the Detroit Free Press that "EV adoption levels vary across the country, and we believe our dealers know their market best."
The automaker emphasized that 86% of Americans live within 30 kilometers of a Ford dealership where an electric vehicle can be purchased or serviced. Previously, Ford had to relax the requirements for dealerships that sell electric vehicles, allowing for less investment and fewer chargers.
Ford dealers are refusing to sell electric vehicles as battery-powered models are no longer in demand, and the automaker is slowing down the electrification program for its lineup. So far, traditional models with gasoline and diesel internal combustion engines are making money, and earnings from sales of electric vehicles are doubtful against the backdrop of infrastructure costs.
Although the development scenario for Ford’s electric vehicle line is not the most optimal for the auto giant, sales of battery-powered models are growing and reaching new highs. The Ford F-150 Lightning became the best-selling electric pickup truck for the first 11 months of 2023. There are no strong competitors yet, but in 2024 the Tesla Cybertruck and GMC Sierra will be on the market.
