Production of the new Nissan Leaf will start in March 2025.
Production of the second generation of the popular Nissan Leaf electric car will begin in March 2025 at a plant in Sunderland, UK, Electrek reports. The project is part of Nissan's £2.9 billion investment plan announced last November.
As part of this plan, the new Leaf will be the first in a series of new models, including electric versions of the Qashqai and Juke, planned for subsequent years.
According to Alan Johnson, the company's vice president of regional manufacturing, the UK project "does not come without its challenges." "It's a real challenge," he said, adding that electric vehicle production in the UK "can be successful" but only if "all the stars align."
Johnson noted the lack of “clear and stable policies” and “difficulties in creating a regional supply chain.” The biggest challenge, he says, is the cost of energy.
To combat high energy costs, Nissan is increasing the use of renewable sources at the plant. About 20% of the energy consumed (approximately 250 MW per week) is produced by local wind and solar power plants.
Nissan plans to reach 100% renewable energy, although no exact time frame has been set. The plant upgrades include building a new battery factory for the next generation Leaf and another gigafactory nearby.
The new Nissan Leaf will be inspired by the Chill-Out concept and will take the form of a crossover coupe, although it will be more compact than the Qashqai. According to unofficial sources, the Leaf will be styled as a "mini Ariya".
