Toyota has introduced a Land Cruiser for trips on the Moon.
Toyota has developed an SUV-moon rover Baby Land Cruiser. The car was created by the American division of the Calty Design Research concern in honor of its 50th anniversary. So far, the novelty exists only in the form of a virtual concept. However, in the future, a real embodiment of the prototype is possible. It is expected that the lunar rover will take part in the study of other celestial bodies (the Moon and Mars) in the future.
The design of the moon rover SUV resembles the Land Cruiser FJ40 model. The car received an unusual radiator grille with the inscription Toyota, airless wheels protected from punctured tires, a large windshield for a better view and a double-leaf rear door.
The Baby Land Cruiser has a digital dashboard and special joysticks for controlling the car. Technical specifications are not reported. Toyota has been working on the project together with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) since 2019. Toyota's first lunar rover is expected to be used during a research mission to Earth's satellite in 2030.
In February 2020, NASA asked automotive companies to join the development of a new lunar rover. According to the department's concept, the new lunar rover should have a leaky open cabin, advanced equipment, as well as remote control.
